Industrial Coating Applications — Products by Sector

Epoxy Floor & Tank Coatings

Epoxy floor coatings and tank linings are among the highest-volume coating applications in the GCC. The formulation typically requires: Bisphenol A epoxy resin (RAYPOXY YR-128, EEW 185–195), a polyamide or cycloaliphatic amine hardener (RAYCURE 915/238/960), a reactive diluent (RAYCURE RD12) for viscosity reduction, and TiO₂ for opacity in topcoats. DMP-30 (RAYCURE K54) is added at 0.5–2 phr for faster return-to-service.

Alkyd & Solvent-Based Decorative Paints

Alkyd resin-based decorative and industrial maintenance paints account for a significant share of the GCC coatings market. Key raw materials: alkyd resins (short/medium/long oil), mixed xylenes (CAS 1330-20-7) as primary solvent, titanium dioxide (rutile grade) at 18–22% loading for hiding power, and iron oxide pigments (red, yellow, black) for industrial primers. Driers (cobalt, zirconium, calcium naphthenate) are added at 0.02–0.2% to catalyse air oxidation cure.

Water-Based Architectural Emulsion

Styrene-acrylic emulsion forms the binder backbone of water-based interior and exterior architectural paints. Formulation requires: styrene-acrylic emulsion at 25–40% (dry weight) as binder, TiO₂ (sulphate or chloride process rutile) at 18–25% for opacity, Butyl Glycol as coalescing agent for film formation at low temperatures, and a defoamer (mineral oil or silicone-based) to prevent foam during high-speed dispersion. Organic pigments (phthalo blue, benzimidazolone yellow) are used for tinting.

Printing Inks — Flexo & Gravure

Flexible packaging and label printing inks use either solvent-based or water-based systems. Solvent-based flexo and gravure inks use ethyl acetate (CAS 141-78-6) as primary solvent — fast evaporation, good solvency for nitrocellulose and polyurethane binders, low residual solvent in food packaging. Pigments for printing inks require high tinting strength and good dispersibility: organic pigments (Pigment Yellow 13/83, Pigment Red 57:1, Pigment Blue 15:3) and carbon black for black inks.
