Paint Driers (Siccatives) — Cobalt, Manganese, Zirconium | UAE

Paint driers (siccatives) are metallic soap catalysts that accelerate the oxidative crosslinking of drying oils and alkyd resin binders in solvent-based paints and varnishes. Cobalt, manganese, zirconium, calcium, and rare earth driers each play specific roles in controlling surface dry, through-dry, and hardness development of alkyd coatings — widely used in protective maintenance paints, decorative oil-based paints, and industrial alkyd coatings across UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Applications — UAE, Saudi Arabia & GCC

Alkyd Protective Maintenance Paints

Cobalt + zirconium drier combination is standard in alkyd anti-corrosion maintenance paints for structural steel across UAE and Saudi Arabia industrial facilities — provides fast surface dry for recoat scheduling and good through-dry for early handling strength.

Decorative Gloss Alkyd Paints

Cobalt + calcium drier combination in high-gloss alkyd architectural paints — cobalt provides fast tack-free time critical for dust-free drying in UAE's dusty environments, calcium improves wetting and synergises with cobalt.

Industrial Alkyd Coatings — Primers & Topcoats

Complete drier package (Co + Mn + Zr + Ca) optimised for industrial maintenance alkyd primer and topcoat systems on steel structures, storage tanks, and equipment in UAE and Saudi Arabia industrial facilities.

Wood Finishes & Furniture Coatings

Manganese + zirconium drier combination in alkyd and oil-modified varnishes for wood furniture and joinery in UAE and Saudi Arabia indoor applications — deeper penetration and better through-hardness than cobalt alone.

Printing Inks (Oxidative Drying)

Cobalt and manganese driers used in sheet-fed offset printing inks for the UAE and Saudi Arabia print industry — accelerates oxidative drying of linseed or soya oil vehicle systems.

Usage & Recommendations

Standard alkyd drier package: Co 0.04% + Zr 0.08% + Ca 0.10% (as metal on alkyd solids). Adjust Co level based on oil length of alkyd — longer oil alkyds require slightly more Co. In UAE summer conditions, elevated ambient temperature accelerates drying — lower drier loading in summer formulations prevents over-oxidation and embrittlement. Cobalt driers are under regulatory review in EU (SVHC status under REACH) — for export markets, consider rare earth or manganese-heavy cobalt-free alternatives. Never exceed recommended drier levels — overdosing causes wrinkling, embrittlement, and reduced long-term film durability.

Storage & Shelf Life

Store in sealed containers at 5–35°C, away from oxidising materials and ignition sources (flammable liquid — white spirit base). Shelf life: 24 months. Protect cobalt driers from light — UV degrades cobalt activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oxidative drying of alkyd paint is a temperature-dependent chemical reaction. Below 15°C, drying rate approximately halves for every 10°C drop. UAE winters (December–February), particularly in Riyadh and Al Ain, can see overnight temperatures below 10°C — significantly extending alkyd dry times. Solutions: (1) increase cobalt drier addition level slightly for winter production, (2) apply during the warmest part of the day, (3) keep newly painted items in a warm environment during initial drying. Conversely, in UAE summer (45°C+), over-drying can cause wrinkling if drier levels are not adjusted downward. Contact Raykem for seasonal drier package recommendations.

Cobalt is classified as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) under REACH due to possible carcinogenicity. Cobalt-free drier systems use manganese as the primary drier, supplemented by rare earth metals (cerium, lanthanum), vanadium, or iron. Cobalt-free systems dry slightly slower and may have different colour development than cobalt systems. For UAE and Saudi Arabia domestic market, cobalt driers are currently acceptable. For products exported to Europe or produced for clients with REACH compliance requirements, cobalt-free alternatives are preferred. Contact Raykem for a cobalt-free drier package recommendation for your specific alkyd system.
