Iron Oxide Red Pigment — CAS 1309-37-1 | UAE & Saudi Arabia

CAS No: 1309-37-1 · HS Code: 2821.10

Raykem supplies Iron Oxide Red pigment (Fe₂O₃, CAS 1309-37-1) — the most widely used coloured inorganic pigment in the GCC paint and construction industry. With exceptional UV stability, heat resistance up to 260°C, alkali resistance, and non-toxicity, red iron oxide is the preferred colourant for anti-corrosion primers, architectural coatings, concrete products, paving blocks, and industrial paints across UAE and Saudi Arabia. Available in synthetic grades (high tinting strength) and natural grades.

Applications — UAE, Saudi Arabia & GCC

Anti-Corrosion Primers & Industrial Coatings

Iron oxide red is the principal pigment in red oxide primers — the foundational anti-corrosion coating for structural steel across UAE and Saudi Arabia construction, oil & gas, and infrastructure projects. Provides barrier protection and passive corrosion inhibition.

Architectural & Decorative Paints

Used in terracotta, brick-red, brown, and earth-tone architectural paints for UAE and Saudi Arabia residential, commercial, and heritage buildings. Excellent UV stability prevents fading under intense GCC solar radiation.

Concrete Colouring & Paving Products

Primary colourant for coloured concrete, paving blocks, roof tiles, and precast concrete elements across UAE and Saudi Arabia construction market. Alkali-stable — compatible with cement environments.

Road Markings & Traffic Paint

Iron oxide red is used in road marking paints for designated traffic areas, cycle lanes, and safety markings across GCC infrastructure projects.

Waterproofing Membranes & Sealants

Colourant for coloured bituminous waterproofing membranes and elastomeric roof coatings widely used across UAE and Saudi Arabia building projects.

Powder Coatings

Used as a colourant in thermoset powder coatings for architectural aluminium, steel furniture, and industrial components — heat stability up to 260°C accommodates the curing oven temperatures.

Usage & Recommendations

Typical loading in paint: 2–15% by weight depending on colour depth required. Disperse thoroughly in grinding stage — inadequate dispersion causes specking and colour weakness. For cement colouring: use at 1–5% by weight of cement. Incompatible with strong oxidising agents. Store dry — avoid moisture ingress which causes agglomeration. Contact Raykem for grade selection (standard, high-tinting, transparent, or low-oil-absorption) matching your specific formulation requirements.

Storage & Shelf Life

Store in original sealed bags in a cool, dry, covered warehouse away from moisture. Iron oxide pigments do not have a defined shelf life when stored dry — maintain stock rotation. Avoid direct water contact which causes lumping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Synthetic iron oxide red (CAS 1309-37-1, α-Fe₂O₃) is produced by controlled precipitation or calcination, delivering consistent particle size, high Fe₂O₃ content (≥ 96%), high tinting strength, and uniform shade. Natural iron oxide (from mined ochre or haematite) is lower cost but variable in quality, lower Fe₂O₃ content, and less consistent colour. For paint and coating applications in UAE and Saudi Arabia, Raykem supplies synthetic grades that meet international standards (ISO 1248, ASTM D3722) with full COA.

Yes. Iron oxide pigments (red, yellow, black, brown) are approved inorganic pigments under Saudi SASO standards for architectural and industrial coatings. They contain no lead, chromium VI, mercury, or cadmium — all prohibited heavy metals under SASO heavy metal limits. Raykem supplies a full COA confirming Fe₂O₃ content and heavy metal compliance with every batch, supporting your SABER certification process.

For paint and coatings: standard particle size (D50 0.3–0.5 μm) provides good tinting strength and opacity. For transparent iron oxide effects (wood stains, automotive): use ultrafine transparent grade (D50 < 0.1 μm). For concrete colouring and paving blocks: standard or coarser particle sizes (D50 0.4–0.8 μm) are suitable and more cost-effective. Contact Raykem for grade-specific recommendations.
