Typical loading: 2–12% by weight in architectural paints. For buff/ochre tones, blend with iron oxide red and titanium dioxide. Note the 180°C heat stability limit — do not use in powder coatings or stoving systems above this temperature (use iron oxide red or brown instead). For concrete: 1–5% by cement weight. Disperse thoroughly in grinding mill — yellow iron oxides have higher oil absorption than red grades and require more dispersant attention.

Iron oxide yellow (FeOOH, goethite) undergoes thermal dehydration above approximately 180°C: 2FeOOH → Fe₂O₃ + H₂O. The resulting Fe₂O₃ is iron oxide red (hematite). This is an irreversible phase transition. For applications involving heat above 180°C — powder coatings, stoving enamels, high-temperature industrial coatings — use iron oxide red, brown, or black, which are already in the hematite or magnetite phase and are thermally stable.
