DBP — Dibutyl Phthalate Plasticiser | CAS 84-74-2 | UAE

CAS No: 84-74-2 · HS Code: 2917.12

DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate, CAS 84-74-2) is an efficient general-purpose phthalate plasticiser widely used in PVC compounding, cellulose nitrate lacquers, printing inks, adhesives, and rubber applications across UAE and Saudi Arabia manufacturing. DBP's low molecular weight provides excellent solvating power and strong plasticising efficiency — making it the standard plasticiser for nitrocellulose systems, cellulose acetate, and flexible PVC applications where high compatibility and strong gelation are the primary requirements.

Applications — UAE, Saudi Arabia & GCC

Nitrocellulose Lacquers & Wood Finishes

DBP is the preferred plasticiser for nitrocellulose lacquers used in furniture finishing across UAE and Saudi Arabia manufacturing. Provides excellent flexibility and adhesion to wood substrates — essential for furniture exported from UAE free zones.

Printing Inks — Gravure & Flexo

Used in gravure and flexo printing inks for the UAE packaging industry — DBP imparts film flexibility and adhesion to plastic substrates, preventing cracking in flexible packaging.

PVC Compounding

Efficient primary plasticiser for flexible PVC compounds, cables, and flooring products manufactured across UAE industrial zones. Lower cost per unit plasticiser effect vs DINP in small-scale applications.

Adhesives & Sealants

Plasticiser in solvent-based contact adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesives, and polysulphide sealants used across UAE and Saudi Arabia construction industry.

Rubber Formulations

Processing aid and secondary plasticiser in synthetic rubber compounds for industrial applications across the GCC.

Usage & Recommendations

In nitrocellulose lacquers: 15–30% DBP on resin solids. In flexible PVC: 20–50 phr depending on required flexibility. Note: DBP is classified as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) under REACH (reproductive toxicity, Category 1B). For European export markets, DINP (CAS 68515-48-0) or DINCH (CAS 166412-78-8) are preferred alternatives. For UAE and Saudi Arabia domestic production, DBP remains commercially used but SASO and regulatory trends are toward restriction of SVHCs. Contact Raykem for alternative plasticiser recommendations where REACH compliance is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — DBP (CAS 84-74-2) is listed as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, classified as a reproductive toxicant (Category 1B). Under REACH Article 7, products containing DBP above 0.1% w/w exported to the EU must notify ECHA and inform customers. DBP is also restricted in toys and childcare articles in the EU. For EU-export applications, Raykem recommends DINP (CAS 68515-48-0) as the primary alternative for PVC, or TXIB for nitrocellulose lacquers. Contact Raykem for a compliance-oriented plasticiser recommendation.
