HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) | CAS 9004-65-3 | UAE & GCC

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC, CAS 9004-65-3) is a non-ionic cellulose ether that is the most important additive in construction dry-mix mortars. It provides water retention, workability, open time extension, and anti-sagging properties in tile adhesives, wall putty, cement renders, and repair mortars. HPMC is available in a wide range of viscosity grades — from 15,000 cps to 200,000 cps (2% solution, 20°C) — and the correct grade selection is critical for achieving target performance in each formulation. Raykem supplies HPMC across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the GCC for construction chemical manufacturers.

Industry / Application How This Product Is Used
Tile AdhesiveWater retention prevents premature water loss into substrate; open time extension of 20–30 min enables large tile installation
Wall PuttyImproves workability, reduces cracking, and provides a smooth finish on cement and gypsum substrates
Cement RenderAnti-sagging properties allow thick renders to be applied in one coat; improves bond to substrate
EIFS / ETICSCritical in base coat mortars for external insulation systems; provides flexibility and weather resistance
Self-LevellingControls flow time and prevents segregation; essential for pumpable floor levelling compounds

Frequently Asked Questions

What HPMC viscosity grade should I use for tile adhesive?
For C1 grade standard tile adhesive: 40,000–75,000 cps grade (typical dosage: 0.2–0.4%). For C2 grade improved tile adhesive with extended open time: 75,000–100,000 cps (typical dosage: 0.3–0.5%). For large format tiles (300×300mm+): 100,000–200,000 cps at slightly higher dosage. Contact Raykem's technical team for grade selection support.
Does HPMC need to be pre-mixed or can it be added dry to mortar?
HPMC is added dry to the dry-mix mortar formulation and mixes in during the gauging process. It dissolves and hydrates when water is added. Proper mixing order and water temperature (cold water is preferred for faster dissolution) are important. Do not pre-dissolve HPMC in hot water.
Do GCC climate conditions affect HPMC performance?

Why Source from Raykem?

  • Dubai HQ + Riyadh office — local GCC supply
  • COA, SDS, TDS with every shipment
  • CIF/FOB from China, Europe, Southeast Asia
  • Competitive pricing — direct manufacturer sourcing
  • SABER-ready documentation for Saudi Arabia
  • Competitive pricing — direct manufacturer sourcing
Yes. High temperatures (35–50°C in UAE and Saudi Arabia during summer) accelerate hydration and can reduce open time. Use a higher viscosity grade or increase dosage slightly in hot weather. Some HPMC grades are specifically formulated for hot-climate construction — ask Raykem for grade recommendations for GCC applications.
